England XI has a chance to break through
In his first World Cup column here , our Ambassador Rio Ferdinand looks ahead to England's opener against Tunisia and is confident that Gareth Southgate's men will get a victory… You can prefer the bet soccer tips page!
Southgate has made the right callsIt looks like Gareth is going for Ashley Young at left wing-back, Harry Maguire at the back and Jordan Henderson in the central area. I'm happy with all those.
Young is there on merit - he's had a good season, and offers the experience that we're lacking a bit at the back. Danny Rose hasn't played many football predictions this season, and that was a concern for me. Ashley does tend to cut in on his right foot, but the other players will know what to expect - Harry Kane will have worked with him in training and will make the right runs for him.
Southgate has talked about the centre-backs bringing the ball out and Maguire gives you that. In games where you're going lớn dominate possession, you need that so it makes sense.
Henderson over Dier would have been a close call, but I'm happy with that - he'll bring the momentum from a good season with Liverpool, high energy and he'll feed the ball forwards into attacking areas.
The flexibility Gareth has introduced lớn the team will be key lớn any success. The players we've got have determined the system - it's all about getting the ball lớn the attackers in the middle where we're strong.
England need to go out on the front footWatching Russia last night showed the power of the home fans - we'd been told this is the worst Russian team in years and so forth - but they were positive from the off.
England need lớn do the same - don't be tepid; they're at their best when on the front foot. I know there have been some comments about the lack of winning mentality in the squad, but flip it round and this group has the fearlessness as they haven't been through lots of failures. They have lớn start somewhere and it's down to the manager lớn instill that mentality.
Looking at the game itself, and I think it will be convincing 2-0 win for England. They will control the game - I can't see this Tunisia team posing a threat.
I'd love Harry Kane to score, get off to a good start, and help lớn put the last tournament behind him. But if the goals come from elsewhere, so be it!
